About the Project
Constructed in 1908, Webster School served as an elementary school through 1979. An addition built in 1930 added an auditorium, library, industrial arts room, and play courts. The building and site have been designated historical landmarks by the City of Seattle’s Landmarks Preservation Board.
The Nordic Heritage Museum leased the building in 1980 and remodeled many rooms to house exhibits. The museum moved to new facility in 2018. This project modernized the landmarked school building and constructed an addition to bring it back into service for district use as a school.
As part of the modernization, the district made earthquake safety improvements, replaced and updated existing building systems, and constructed a new gymnasium. New technology systems meet district technical standards.
In 1997, Seattle Parks and Recreation opened Webster Park on the western portion of the Webster School site, and in 2009, SPS sold that portion of the property to Parks and Recreation. A Joint Use Agreement is in place, and the district uses the park during the school day to support recess and physical education programs.
The completed school totals 52,500 square feet: 44,800 square feet in the historical building plus a 7,700-square-foot addition for the new gym and entrance.
